Description
Morning on a market in Turmi village, Omo valley in Southern Ethiopia. People sit on the ground selling food and other products. A young girl from a Hamer tribe sells vegetables. She wears a traditional makeup made from mixed together ochre, water, and resin. The mixture is then rubbed into hair and put on skin. The twisted hair covered with the red mixture is the sign of health and welfare. The iron torques worn around the neck indicate that the woman is already married and signal the wealth and prestige. The hat is made from squash. It protects against sun and rain.
