Description
Visitors entering the main or grand entrance hall at Hanbury Hall. On the wall above the main staircase can be seen part of the magnificent mural painted by Sir James Thornhill in 1710. This paintingd depicts Odysseus finding the Greek hero Achilles amongst the daughters of Lycomedes. On the right-hand side of the image are two impressive butler statues of Moors holding trays. Hanbury Hall is an excellent example of the English-Baroque design but with a more modest and restrained style. The house remained in the hands of the same family until1953 when it was acquired by the National Trust.
