Most stelae in Copán have an associated alter. This is the alter for Stela A, and was used for human sacrifice. The very prominent groove on the topside was for flow of the victim`s blood which was caught in a vessel at the bottom. Pieces of primitive paper were dipped in the blood and burned in a stone vessel as a sacrifice to the gods.
