Close-up of extremely rare Kaibab squirrel near North Rim of Grand Canyon #103715893
Description
A close-up view of the extremely rare Kaibab squirrel. Its habitat is confined entirely to an area of ponderosa pine forests near the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park and a northern section of the Kaibab National Forest located in the Southwest United States - an area of only 20 by 40 miles. It is not found anywhere else in the world. This rare and restricted species is a classic example of evolution through geographic isolation - but that`s a story for another day. Its look is unmistakable: a small squirrel that is mostly black with a fluffy white tail and long tufts on the ears. More than 300,000 acres have been declared the Kaibab Squirrel Area.
