Detail of the ruins of Forte da Luz in Peniche, Portugal. It was part of the medieval defensive structures built by Kings D. Manuel I and D. João III 16th century against the incursions of the British and French corsairs on the Portuguese west coast. It had a polygonal shape, with bastions at the vertices crowned by circular hangars, and it was armed with cannons on the embankment, on the side of the sea.
