Description
Sugarcane, orÃÂ sugar cane, are several species of tallÃÂ perennialÃÂ true grassesÃÂ of the genusÃÂ Saccharum, tribeÃÂ Andropogoneae, native to the warm temperate to tropical regions ofÃÂ South AsiaÃÂ andÃÂ Melanesia, and used forÃÂ sugarÃÂ production. It has stout, jointed, fibrous stalks that are rich in theÃÂ sugarÃÂ sucrose, which accumulates in theÃÂ stalk internodes. The plant is two to six meters & x28;six to twenty feet& x29; tall. All sugar cane species interbreed and the major commercialÃÂ cultivarsÃÂ are complexÃÂ hybrids. Sugarcane belongs to the grass familyÃÂ Poaceae, an economically important seed plant family that includes maize, wheat, rice, andÃÂ sorghum, and manyÃÂ forageÃÂ crops.
