Description
The Piazza del Popolo is one of the best known places in Rome, especially for foreigners. Located north of the city, near the Borghese Park. In Spanish its name means the Town Square, although historically the name comes from the Latin populus, name taken by the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo and which was baptized in 1655 by Pope Alexander II. The Plaza is the entrance for those entering the city via Via Flaminia. On the north side is the Porta del Popolo and the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo. The Porta was modified in the year 1655 by order of Pope Alexander VII and was in charge of Bernini. Rome Italy Europe
