Archangel Gabriel - Heroes' Square, Budapest, Hungary #1091560
Description
Detail of the statue of Archangel Gabriel from the Heroes' Square in Budapest, Hungary, holding aloft Saint Stephenââ¬â¢s crown. This wide and extravagant parade ground was laid out by architect Albert Schieckedanz for the Hungarian millennium celebrations of 1896, when the country celebrated 1000 years since Arpad and his men occupied the Carpathian Basin. At the base of Gabriel's column is Arpad himself and the chieftains of the seven Magyar tribes who followed him. Behind the column, in stately semi-circular file, are kings and heroes from Hungarian history.
