Description
San Francisco was just another sleepy town, until gold was discovered at Sutter Mill, in 1848. With the sudden increase in California's population due to the gold prospecters, and sudden increase in the states wealth due to all of this gold, when California became a state it was one of the few states that went straight to statehood without first being a territory.
