Title
Canary Islands, Lanzarote: Vineyard in Volcanic Landscape #110686713
Description
This unusual vista is actually of a vineyard. It was taken in January, so the vineyard looks even more barren than in summer. Lanzarote`s vineyards have thousands of holes and walls - each holding a single vine - to protect the plants from strong winds and to provide them with water that is trapped in the holes. Larger volcanic stones are balanced around the wind-facing edge of the hole creating a low, semicircular barrier. The height of the walls and the depth of the holes are important: The vine has to be able get enough sun. Almost all wineries bottle their own product and sell their wines in bodegas run by the vintners themselves. This is the La Geria Winery www.lageria.com.
