Turlutte, a modified jig used by artisanal fishermen in Senegal to catch octopus #111308792
Description
One of the main sources of income for artisanal Senegalese fishermen is catching octopus for export; octopus has lately become one of the main seafood products exports from Senegal. Its main destination markets are Southern European countries Spain and Italy in particular, and Eastern Asian countries Japan, South Korea. Despite this fishery boom, the fishery has important management issues and its sustainability is not warranted. Still, octopus caught with artisanal gear can be deeemed to be a more sustainable product than if caught by more harmful fishing gears, such as bottom trawling. To catch it, they use the `turlutte`, a jig made by multiple hooks at the end of a handline. This can be used also for cuttlefish Sepia officinalis.
