It was a long, dry trail. The horses were dragging their front hooves over the dusty path. I was wondering if we would have to dismount and let them find their own way home when we made a sharp turn and uncovered a cool, shady stream straddled by an old stone bridge. It looked cool; it looked wet; it looked like the perfect spot to unsaddle and rest in the shade with our saddles as pillows, as we watched the diagonal shadows of nearby trees move their diagonal stripes along the side of the bridge until they disappeared, while the horses drank deeply and played in the cool waters.
