Description
The ÃŽles du Salut - Islands of Salvation - are a group of three small islands about 6.8 miles 11 km off the coast of French Guiana in the Atlantic Ocean. The islands were used as penal colony. The prison opened in 1852 and was closed down in 1953. Most notorious of the three islands is Devil's Island, where Alfred Dreyfus was imprisoned for almost five years. This lighthouse was built in 1932 - right next to the military hospital, on the left.
