In the early 1900`s, telephone service was becoming more and more common, and most cities had only local exchange offices to handle the expanding business, including San Francisco. About this time, in San Francisco, it was realized, a single exchange to pull every one together, would work much better. Most buildings of the period were still wood frame. This building, started in 1905, not only had a steel reinforced frame but also used steel shutters for the window. So when the earthquake and fire of 1906 hit the city, this was one of the very few buildings to have survived.
