Description
Centaurea cyanus, commonly known asÃÂ cornflowerÃÂ orÃÂ bachelor& x27;s button,[note 1]ÃÂ is an annualÃÂ flowering plantÃÂ in the familyÃÂ Asteraceae, native to Europe. In the past it often grew as aÃÂ weedÃÂ in cornfields & x28;in the broad sense of the word & x22;corn& x22;, referring toÃÂ grains, such as wheat, barley, rye, or oats& x29;, hence its name. It is nowÃÂ endangeredÃÂ in its native habitat byÃÂ agricultural intensification, particularly over-use ofÃÂ herbicides, destroying its habitat. It is also, however, through introduction as anÃÂ ornamental plantÃÂ in gardens and a seed contaminant in crop seeds, nowÃÂ naturalisedÃÂ in many other parts of the world, including North America and parts of Australia.
