A man of many talents and `first` accomplishments, but almost forgotten today, William Leidesdorff was in pre-gold San Francisco. In addition to having built the first hotel and shipping warehouse, Leidesdorff was also the nations first African American diplomat when he was named vice counsel to Mexico, in 1845. His achievements go on and on.
