An American stagecoach driver and guard seat, museum display, 1. #113828796
Description
A stagecoach is a very early form of public transportation, going back to at least 13th century England. The United States started having stagecoaches in the 18th century. Even passagier coaches would often carry valuables so there would be an armed guard who rode along side the driver, the person `riding shotgun`. Although this term is very popular today, it was only first used in the novel `The Sunset Trail` of 1905, with the guard position long referred to as `shotgun messanger`.
