Old Pacific seaport city of Valparaiso, World Heritage Site and cultural capital of Chile #113929073
Description
The colonial city of ValparaÃÂso, Chile, enjoyed a privileged status during the development of maritime trade routes in the 19th-century, when it was one of the main seaport cities in the South Pacific. Back then it was known as The Jewel of the Pacific and ââ¬ÅLittle San Franciscoââ¬Â. The opening of the Panama Canal marked the beginning of its decline. Nowadays its historic quarter has been designed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. However, funding is needed to preserve its heritage, much of which is still in a dire conservation state.
