Description

Pictured is part of a City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program Mural entitled `Mapping Courage`, by artist Willis `Nomo` Humphrey. It honors the legacy of W.E.B. DuBois and Engine 11. William Edward Burghardt `W. E. B.` Du Bois was an American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, author, writer and editor. He was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1895. Engine 11 became the firehouse where all African American firefighters were stationed, often working under white supervisors and chiefs.
