Brigadier General Smedley D. Butler commemorative, City Hall, Philadelphia #114098758
Description
Pictured is a commemorative to Brigadier General Smedley D. Butler. He had a distinguished 34-year career as a marine and was the most decorated Marine in U.S. history. He was the only marine to be awarded the Brevet Medal and two Medals of Honor, all for separate actions. In 1924 he left the Marines to become the City`s Director of Public Safety, in charge of the notoriously corrupt city`s police and fire departments. He resigned under pressure 2 years later, and stated later `cleaning up Philadelphia was worse than any battle I was ever in.`
