Château Queyras in Queyras Nature Park, France #114165332
Description
Château Queyras village is marked by the impressive Vauban fortress rising out of the top of an island-rock at a narrow gap of the Guil valley. The Fort-Queyras enters history as a castle attached to the Dauphiné in 1265. In the 16th century the castle was subject to the wars of religion and then, in 1695, resisted attack from Savoyarde troops although the village was partially destroyed. Following this invasion, Vauban came to inspect the border of the Alps and drew up plans to make the castle impregnable.
