One of the earliest, middle class suburbs in San Francisco is Liberty Hill. Built in the 19th century, this little neighborhood escaped the devastating earthquake and fire of 1906 that destroyed most of the rest of the city. Because it still contains intact period architecture of the period, it was designated an historic district. Italianate style architecture is patterned after the Italian style of the Renaissance, and first popularized in England in the 18th century. This home was built in 1863. Number 49 was built as a rental, in 1870.
