Description

Wadi Kulat, transliteration: Wadi Kelt, translated as `Maqarat Ma`ayan B`Sal`a`, is a stream that descends from the area of Neve Ya`akov in Jerusalem and flows into the Jordan Valley east of Jericho. The length of the stream is about 30 km, and its catchment area is about 130 square kilometers. The stream passes through deep canyons, crossing the upper bend of the Judean Desert and the northern part of the cliff. A phenomenon unique to the stream, which is not found in the Judean desert rivers, is the lower section of the stream, which runs in the direction of a synchline. In the past, the river was the boundary between the Judean Desert and the Benjamin Desert. Along the stream there are several springs, two active monasteries and archaeological remains from different periods. Most of the stream is located within the declared area nature reserve - nature reserve Nahal Prat. Inspectors of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority regularly stay in two places in the reserve - Ein Mabu`a and Ein Prat.
