Jaffa is an ancient port city in the Land of Israel, on the Mediterranean coast. Jaffa was an independent city for thousands of years until it was united in 1949 with Tel Aviv, and since then it has been one of the districts of Tel Aviv-Jaffa.nnDuring the Crusades Jaffa was a district in the Kingdom of Crusader Jerusalem. From then until the twentieth century the city served as a major and important port in the Land of Israel. The construction of nearby Tel Aviv, and the use of other ports, resulted in the port, and then the city, declining. In the War of Independence, the Irgun and Haganah forces occupied the city and the composition of the population changed: Ninety percent of its Arab inhabitants fled, and new immigrants settled in the area.
