Because the Golden Gate Bridge is such a massive, man made feature over a navigable bay, it requires not just many safety features but also warning features. These warning features are different for planes that fly over it and ships that sail under it. This safety light on the south side, the San Francisco side, is east facing out to San Francisco Bay, for the ship traffic.
