Description
Pictured is a Norimono palanquin from the Edo period, 19th Century. Palanquins, called norimono, were used as transportation by important individuals. The passenger rode inside the small compartment as it was carried by an attendant at each end. It is located in the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum: The Samurai Collection. It contains nearly three hundred Japanese samurai objects, including suits of armor, helmets, masks, horse armor, and weaponry, dating from the 12th to the 19th century AD with a focus on the Edo period.
