Perennial aquatic herbs; rhizomes hypertrophic. Petiole cylindrical, slender. Leaves ellipsoid, floating on water surface, entire, leaf base heart-shaped, leaf surface green, back dark purple. Ye Erxing: floating leaves are round or oval, heart-shaped or arrowhead, often without leaves; calyx four, green; petals usually eight. Fruit obovate, about 3 cm long. The flowers are large and beautiful, float or rise above the water, and blossom during the day and close at night.
