Description
The current location of what was to be this lighthouse was originally part of a series of bell bouyies, but the strong currents in the area kept pulling them out. In February 1901, the SS City of Rio de Janeiro was wrecked of these rocks, claiming 128 lives out of 209 aboard. In 1906 and with much difficulty, a lighthouse was finally built. The foundation alone, of concrete and steel, weight 1,500 tons. In 1966 the upper tower portion was removed, and it was converted to a landing pad for helicopters, and has automated lights. . And, the original paint was alternating bands of red and white, was changed to solid white in 2017.
