Description
Stephen I, also known as King Saint Stephen - Szent István király- was the last Grand Prince of the Hungarians and the first King of Hungary. In Hungary, his feast day celebrated on 20 August is also a public holiday commemorating the foundation of the state. Statue of St Stephen represents the first king of Hungary seated on a destrier, wearing the Hungarian crown and the coronation mantle. King Stephen I united the Magyar tribes and established Christianity in the country at the beginning of the 11th century. The bronze equestrian statue from 1906 stands on a high stone pedestal, which is adorned with reliefs illustrating scenes from the king`s life. Notice the ornate saddlecloth and four figures of lions guarding the king. Budapest, Hungary, Europe
