This church site and the nearby Bosham Harbour have been used by the ancient Kings and nobility of England, such the Viking King Canute, the Saxon King Harold Godwinson and his father - the powerful and manipulative Earl Godwin. The altar tapestry shows Harold Godwinson, before he became king, sailing from Bosham to Normandy where he was forced by William the Conqueror to sign an oath giving the English Throne over to William. This catastrophic event changed English history forever - and caused the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
