The Slapton Sands Disaster Memorial, Devon, England #119766608
Description
During Exercise Tiger at Slapton in preparation for the D-Day landings in Normandy, the Nazi navy attacked `out of the blue`, killing 749 American troops. This was a major disaster but had to be kept top secret to prevent wartime moral from collapsing. The top secret classification was also needed because at the start of the exercise, General Eisenhower authorised live firing and by accident around 450 troops were killed by their own side. Exercise Tiger is also known by the name of Operation Tiger - 1942.
