The ruins of Beaufort Crusader Castle stand on a very high hilltop above huge precipices - therefore difficult to attack. Neverthless the famous warrior Saladin captured the castle in 1190. The flags flying on now on the battlements are those of Hezbollah. The countryside around is populated by small farms, grape vines and forests. The area is short of water in hot summers.
