Due to all the turmoil going on throughout France in the latter part of the 19th century, Modeleine Sophie Barat founded the Catholic Schools of the Sacred Heart in 1801 to educate young woman for broad-reaching social change. Now in some 44 countries, the San Francisco one was founded in 1887. By 1948 and with a growing student population, nuns and students prayed and prayed. Edith Grant, daughter of Joseph and Edith Grant, sold them her 1867 mansion for below-market-value, to keep it from being turned into apartments, or torn down. Joseph Grant was a very wealthy industrialist, and had many homes and ranches.
