The Powell Hyde Memorial Cable Car Turnaround, 1. #121636786
Description
San Francisco`s cable car lines were established begining in 1873 and run as private businesses. By the mid1940`s though, with the car becoming common place, cities around the world were getting rid of their cable car lines. San Francisco socialite Friedel Klussman came forward and actively campaigned to save them. Of the 23 original lines, by 1951 there were only three lines left, and unable to afford the insurance, the city finally bought the three lines in 1952. The city named the Power Hyde Streets turntable in Friedel Klussman memory in 1997, eleven years after her death at age 90. San Francisco`s Cable Cars are the only National Monument in the world.
