In the village of Estany in northeastern Catalonia during the sixteenth century the huge Estany swamp had since ages caused malaria among the local population. After many unsatisfactory attempts since the fifteenth century, in 1734 the abbot of the local monastery of Saint Mary`s began the final works of drainage and desiccation of the swamps which finished with a complete success.
