Arsenal of Fort of Mont-Dauphin, Hautes Alpes, France #123933529
Description
The fortified town of Mont-Dauphin, built by Vauban from 1693, subsequently altered and improved throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, is inscribed on UNESCOââ¬â¢s World Heritage list. Past its pink marble walls, there are the barracks where the soldiers of Louis XIV lived, the bartizans where they were on watch, the powder store and the arsenal where they kept their guns. The Italian bombing raid in 1940 destroyed one of the two wings. Only the north wing, built between 1751 and 1757, still stands today.
