Algaeà& x28;/ÃËældÃâi,àÃËælái/; singularàalgaà/ÃËæláÃâ¢/& x29; is an informal term for a large, diverse group ofàphotosyntheticàorganismsàthat are not necessarily closely related, and is thusàpolyphyletic. Included organisms range fromàunicellularàmicroalgaeàgenera, such asàChlorellaàand theàdiatoms, toàmulticellularforms, such as theàgiant kelp, a largeàbrown algaàwhich may grow up to 50àm in length. Most are aquatic andàautotrophicàand lack many of the distinct cell and tissue types, such asàstomata,àxylem, andàphloem, which are found inàland plants. The largest and most complex marine algae are calledàseaweeds, while the most complex freshwater forms are theàCharophyta, aàdivisionàof green algae which includes, for example,àSpirogyraàand theàstoneworts.
