Description

This cave at Bet Guvrin was used initially to store water in the period of the Greek conquest of ancient Israel. The central stone is the remains of a column that supported the ceiling. At some point nesting boxes were carved into the lower walls to rail doves which were used to provide fertilizer and eggs, and also served as a source of meat. Free Polish troops occupied the cave during WW II and carved the words `Warsaw Poland` and the date 1943 which are visible on the large stone.
