Description
As this common name implies, the Brachyplatystoma is not your household aquarium catfish, but is actually some of the largest catfish out there. They can grow as much as 12 feet 3.6 meters in length, weighing 440 pounds 200 Kilograms. These are best viewed, and safely viewed, in larger public aquariums like this one at the Steinhart Aquarium at the Academy of Science in Golden Gate Park. In nature they are most common in the Amazon and Orinoco Basins of South America.
