Description

The project to build a new courthouse is stopped on Place Leclerc in Angers. The work began in 1863 on the plans of architect Charles-Edmond Isabelle. The project management is under the direction of Isabelle Matzger and Auguste Beignet. The courthouse was inaugurated in 1875 after extensive work. It replaces the former President of Place des Halles - since christened Place Louis-Imbach - whose entrance gate has been moved to the gardens of the former Saint-Jean Hospital. The building is characterized by the severity of its elevations and the forearm of eight Ionic columns typically of a grand courthouse. The carved pediment reflects the solemnity and the institution of justice. It is part of an urban ensemble by closing the esplanade of Champ-de-Mars which is now called Jardin du Mail.
