Description
Jaffna, Sri Lanka - February 17, 2017: Visitors stand on a wall of the historic Jaffna Fort overlooking the sea in northern Sri Lanka. A cow is seen grazing on the grass by a weathered graite wall. The fort was originally constructed by the Portuguese in 1618 under Phillippe de Oliveira following the Portuguese invasion. It was captured by the Dutch in 1658 who expanded it. In 1795, it was taken over by the British, and remained under the control of a British garrison till 1948. It was the scene of fierce battle between the Sri Lankan Army and the Tamil Tiger rebels during the country`s recent civil war.
