Pond cypress tree (Taxodium ascendens), Jones Lake, North Carolina, October, 2008. This natural lake is part of the Carolina bays, whose geologic formation is still considered to be a mystery. The tea-colored waters of the lake are caused by tannins in the surrounding soil. As a result, the water is highly acidic and limits aquatic wildlife.
