Description
Originally built in 1881 and advertised as being fire and earthquake safe, the six story building was so badly damaged by the earthquake of 1906, it had to be completely demolished. James D. Phelan, the son of the original builder, had his eleven story building opened September 1908, and first day of 1909 opened for offices, one of the first buildings in the city to do so, so quickly.
