Colchester castle keep is the largest Norman keep in Europe and was built at the behest of William the Conqueror. Construction started some time prior to 1079. It is built on the ruins of a Roman temple of Cladius and work was completed in 1100. It is currently owned by Colchester town and houses a museum.
