Description
The courtyard of the medieval castle of Alcoutim. The construction of Alcoutim Castle began during the reign of D.Dinis in the 14th century, with the aim of defending the border and controlling trade on the Guadiana River. Its military function remained until 1878, when the fortified enclosure began to function as a `butchery`, still under the tutelage of the Ministry of War.In 1960, the monument was the subject of work. consolidation and restoration by the Directorate General of Monuments and National Buildings DGEMN. From 1992, the city council began a revitalization project of the castle, which resulted in its classification as a historic monument by decree of 30 November 1993 and the completion of the first archaeological surveys inside the site by the services of Archeology.
