The construction of Alcoutim Castle began during the reign of D.Dinis in the 14th century, with the aim of defending the border and controlling trade on the Guadiana River. From 1992, the city council began a revitalization project of the castle, which resulted in its classification as a historic monument by decree of 30 November 1993 and the completion of the first archaeological surveys inside the site by the services of Archeology.
