Old remains of sulphur factory on White Island Whakaari, NZ’s only active marine volcano. Whakaari sits offshore from Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty on the North Island of New Zealand. The island, is a giant, barren moonscape streaked with iron oxide reds and vivid sulphur whites and yellows with steaming cracks in the ground, bubbling pools and roaring gas fumeroles.
