In the Christian tradition the flower has come to represent the Easter Holiday and resurrection of Christ. In Victorian times the flower represented modesty, purity and sweetness, and lent its name to the expression “lily-white” which was used to describe people who had these qualities. In the Catholic tradition the flower was associated with the Virgin Mary symbolizing innocence and purity and is sometimes referred to as the Madonna Lily. The lily has often been used in funerary floral decoration in which it represents the restoration of soul’s innocence of the deceased person.
