Russian-born ballet dancer, choreographer, actress, and author Natalia Makarova participates at a booksigning for her volume entitled `A Dance Autobiography,` at a Chicago bookstore on February 13, 1980. She defected from the Soviet Union to the West in 1970 and performed extensively with the Kirov Ballet in Russia, the London-based Royal Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre in New York City. Makarova won the Tony Award for her acting performance in `On Your Toes` in 1983 and for the same production in London in 1985 won the Olivier Award.
