Hinterhaus Castle ruins above Spitz, on the Danube River, Wachau Valley, Lower Asutria. #135369631
Description

Pictured are ruins of the Hinterhaus Castle above the town of Spitz on the Danube River, Wachau Valley, Lower Austria. The Wachau Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is a legend called `The Ghost of Hinterhaus Castle`. As the legend goes…Henry the Iron was married to Adelheid. While giving birth to one of their children in Hinterhaus Castle, she died in childbirth. The unwritten law was that a husband should wait one year before re-marrying. Henry fell in love with a beautiful young girl in the Village of Spitz and married her before the year was up. Shortly after the marriage he died suddenly, his death attributed to his disobeying the law and not waiting a year to marry. Now, every year on the day of Henry’s death, the ghost of Adelheid can be heard screaming from the window.
