`` Topkapı `` and `` Edirnekapı `` played an important role in the conquest of Istanbul. Janissaries, the city entered the gate between these two doorway. In the fierce battles of the day of conquest, the janissaries passing through the last tower door of the Antemiyus fortress near Edirnekapı climbed over the inner wall. The Byzantine soldiers who defended the space between the inner and outer walls tried to run back when they saw the Turks, but they could not enter inside the Edirnekapı from the crowd and chewed up dead and piled as dead. The last Byzantine emperor Constantine is also known to have died in the clashes on the inside of Topkapi. Meanwhile, Azapkapı in Galata and Paşakapısı in Üsküdar still maintain their presence as the gated districts of Istanbul.
